GAME 6: “Step-hen the winning direction”

Game 6 (Price vs Strasburg)

Boston sent David Price back to the mound to oppose Stephen Strasburg, who hadStephen_Strasburg henceforth been a spectator due to usage limit concerns. After a scoreless Red Sox half inning, the Nationals got to work against Price. Rendon reached first to lead off the inning on a Shaw error, and was subsequently plated on a 400-foot Bryce Harper homer. 2-0 Nats. In the Red Sox second, two walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs. Strasburg struck out David Price, and then induced the double play ball from Pedroia to end the threat. After an uneventful third inning, the Red Sox once again threatened. With one out, Travis Shaw came to the plate with runners on second and third. Shaw struck out, though, and Price grounded out to again keep the Red Sox off the scoreboard. The Nationals chased Price in the bottom of the fifth, as Strasburg helped his own cause by singling to start the inning and scoring on a Bruce Harper ground out. 3-0 Nationals after 5. With the Red Sox still scoreless headed into the seventh, reliever Brad Ziegler chased Strasburg with an unlikely single. Game 5 hero Blake Treinen again entered with ever-dangerous Dustin Pedroia at bat, but Pedroia grounded out to end preserve the Nationals shut out. Trea Turner greeted Ziegler with a homer to open the Nationals’ seventh, given the Nationals an insurance run. In the Red Sox eighth, a Bogaerts single and Ortiz walk sandwiched a Chris Young fly out to put two runners on for Mookie Betts. Betts struck out, but Sandy Leon then walked to load the bases for Jackie Bradley with the game and the series perhaps on the line. Treinen again rose to the occasion by striking out Bradley. Red Sox went quietly in the ninth, and the Nationals held on to win the series 4-2.

Post Game

Good managing by Gary; certainly could have the other way had a couple of crucial at bats turned out differently. Thanks to Marc for putting on the tournament and to Dave Koch for sponsoring it. See you in KOD 25!

GAME 5: “Freight Treinen”

Game 5 (Porcello vs Scherzer)

Blake_TreinenThe aces were back on the hill for Game 5, with each manager looking to get the pivotal go ahead win. In contrast to the slugfests that the last two games featured, the pitchers would dominate this one. The Nationals struck first to open the game, as singles by Dan Murphy, Wilson Ramos, and Trea Turner plate one run. Red Sox got one back in the third, as Travis Shaw doubled and then scored on Bogaerts’ single. The game remained knotted at 1-1 after eight innings.  In the top of the ninth, with Tommy Layne on the hill, Jayson Werth coaxed a walk to open the inning. Ryan Zimmerman grounded out, but managed to hustle to first to avoid the double play. Chris Heisey then walked, leaving runners on first and second for David Murphy. Murphy lined a single to right center to plate Zimmerman with the go-ahead run, but Heisey was thrown out at third. Layne got Wilson Ramos to ground out to end the inning, but the Nationals held a crucial one run edge headed into to the bottom of the ninth. With Scherzer having only surrendered four hits, he remained on the mound. After Bogaerts flied out, reliever Shawn Kelley took over. Chris Young singled to put the tying run on first with David Ortiz coming to the plate. You could cut the tension with a knife. With manager Schneider fearing the Ortiz walk-off blast, the somewhat homer-prone Kelley was replaced with righty Blake Treinen. Treinen would be up to the challenge, as he struck out Ortiz and Mookie Betts to save the game. While no photos were taken, one can assume Jonathan Papelbon was scowling from the bullpen in resentment at not getting the opportunity as the “established closer” to lock down the win. Interestingly, Treinen’s was the only save of the series.

Nationals now led 3-2.

GAME 4: “Big Papi, makes ‘em look sloppy”

Game 4 (Buchholz vs Gonzalez)

Pitching quality dropped off, as both teams were now getting deeper intoDavid_Ortiz their respective staffs. Clay Buchholz took the hill for the Red Sox, but was thought to have a short leash. Meanwhile, Nationals started Gio Gonzalez made his first appearance of the tournament. Pundits speculated that Gonzalez might struggle with the deep Red Sox lineup (or any lineup with competent hitters, for that matter) and were they ever right. Dustin Pedroia walked to lead off the Red Sox first, and was soon doubled home by Big Papi. 1-0 Red Sox after one. In the Red Sox second, Hanley Ramirez doubled to lead off the inning, and then scored on a Chris Young homer. 3-0 Red Sox after two. In the Red Sox third, Ortiz singled home Bogaerts with another run, and after three it was 4-0 Sox. After an uneventful fourth, the Sox put up four more in the bottom of the fifth (highlighted by another Ortiz RBI), and it was now 8-0 Red Sox. Nationals would get a meaningless run in each of the seventh and eight, but the Red Sox triumphed in Game 4 12-2 to even the series at 2-2.  Big Papi was 4 for 5 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI to lead the Sox, while Drew Pomeranz threw 5 strong innings in relief of Buchholz for the win.

Series knotted up at 2.

GAME 3: “The Wright Stiff”

Jayson_WerthGame 3 (Wright vs Roark)

The pivotal Game 3 featured Washington co-ace Tanner Roark against Sox lefty Steven Wright. Nationals opened the scoring in the second when weak-hitting shortstop Danny Espinosa, who was surprisingly adequate with the bat in the tournament, singled home Daniel Murhpy and Chris Heisey. No more scoring until the fifth, when Jayson Werth hit his second homer of the series; a Bryce Harper walk, Trea Turner triple, and Anthony Rendon double gave the Nationals a 5-0 lead. That would prove to be more than enough cushion, as the Nationals proceeded to drub Red Sox pitching for 9 more runs. Boston got another Mookie Betts home run but not much else as Game 3 went to the Nationals 14-3, giving

Washington a 2-1 edge in the series.

GAME 2: “The Price, is wrong”

Game 2 (Price vs Roark)

The Red Sox looked to extend their lead with left David Price on the hill,Ryan_Zimmerman while the Nats countered with Joe Ross. After a scoreless two innings, the Nationals broke through in the bottom of the third with Jason Werth blasting  a solo shot to give the home team a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Nationals struck again. The Nationals strung together a three singles to load the bases to start the inning, then Trea Turner grounded out to score one, Ryan Zimmerman singled to score another, and Chris Heisey hit a sac fly to score the third Nationals run. After Anthony Rendon walked, Price was sent to the showers. Tazawa replaced him and struck out Werth to end the threat. With Ross facing usage limits, Nats manager Schneider went to the bullpen early, and a succession of Nationals relievers held the potent Red Sox offense to one base runner for the last five innings to preserve the shutout.

All tied up at 1-1.

FINALS GAME 1: “Bradley Blasts Boston Past Nats”

Jackie_Bradley Jr.Game 1 (Porcello vs Scherzer)

The aces hooked up in Game 1, and it didn’t take long for the Red Sox bats to get going. In the top of the second, Ortiz (who was to have a monster series) walked and was quickly followed by a two-run blast by Mookie Betts. Red Sox catcher Sandy Leon then doubled, and to add to the Nationals’ woes Scherzer was injured and had to leave the game. Yusmeiro Petit replaced him and surrendered another two-run homer, this time to Jackie Bradley Jr.. The second inning ended with no further damage, but the Red Sox held the early 4-0 lead and those runs would prove to be enough. The Nationals did get a run in the bottom of the fifth on a Stephen Drew sac fly, but would come no closer.

Game 1 to the Red Sox 5-1.

DKS/KOD Holiday Festival Finals Preview

BostonR15VSWashingtonS23

Second-seeded Boston (Gary Hinton) and third seeded Washington (Bill Schneider) locked horns for the right to claim the coveted title of “2016-2017 KOD Holiday Tournament Champion.” Boston entered the finals featuring the top-rated offense in the league and a Top-10 pitching staff, while Washington countered with the league’s top staff and a middling offense featuring a strong heart of the order and pretty weak support thereafter.

GAME 5: “Brad to the Bone”

Ziegler_Brad 03GAME 5
S.Wright vs Happ
Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3

Heading into the 6th twenty game winner (20-4, 3.18) J.A. Happ looked to be in the drivers seat with a 2-1 lead.  With one out and Papi on 1st Betts hit a fieldable smash to short that Tulo booted to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  The next 4 batters would hit line drive singles.  If it wasn’t for a Pillar gunning Papi out at the plate the Jays could have been down by 3 runs and not 2.  Tulo redeemed himself…somewhat…with an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th to make it a one run game again.  That’s when the Sahx pen came on to get the final 9 outs to hand Stephen Wright his third tournament victory, which punched Boston’s ticket to the finals.  Brad Ziegler, saved his 2nd of the tournament.  Four different Sahx each had an RBI to account for their 4 runs.  Papi walked 3 times and went 1-2.

Red Sox Win Series 4-1

GAME 4: “Hurricane Andrew”

GAME 4
Pomeranz vs Dickey
Red Sox 11, Blue Jays 42016 HEADSHOT

With a poor 5 runs in 5+ innings performance in a key playoff game one can say with almost certainty that the R.A. Dickey “Error” in Toronto is over.  The Jays knuckelballer, cruised through 4 innings without allowing a run, but the Sahx got their timing down on his straight floater and 80 mph fastball and the hit just kept on coming.  After scoring 2 in the 5th and 3 in the 6th the 2012 NL Cy Young Award winner was now Syanora.  Boston added 6 more over the final 2 innings to win this on big, 11-1.  Everyone in the Sahx lineup, sans Pedroia, had at least one knock.  Papi had 3 knocks and 2 runs scored.  Andrew Benintendi hit solo blasts in back to back innings (8th and 9th).  Ramirez and Bradley chipped in with a jack each.  Saunders his a meaningless homer in the 9th to break the shutout.  Pomeranz got the win with five shutout innings.

Red Sox lead series 3-1

GAME 3: “Encarnacion Instant Treat”

601170873_MCa_TOR_278GAME 3 – Rogers Centre
Price vs Stroman
Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 3

High priced free agent aquisition David Price was a collasal failure giving up 6 runs on 6 hits in 3 innings on the hill.  His opposing number, Marcus Stroman, had the weight of the franchise on his shoulder and he performed with grace and guile for 7 and 1/3 innings.  Stroman had a stressful afternoon thanks to Prices folly.  AFter 2 innings his Jays were up 6-0.  Toronto would stay sharp and finish off the game without feeling much threat from the Sahx.  Edwin Encarnacion (2-3) hit a grand slam off price in the bottom of the 2nd.  Saunders knocked in the other 3 runs as the Jays avoid falling into a 3-0 series deficit.

GAME 2: “Clay molds relief spot into victory”

GAME 2
Sanchez vs Porcello
Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 0600747261_MCa_BOS_0547

Tempers boiled over as Sahx starter Rick Porcello went head hunting.  After hitting Donaldson and Tulo the latter and the hurler got into fist-a-cuffs, which saw both shown the door.  This put the Saxh in a tenuous position needing to fill 6 1/3 innings of game with the pen.  In a genius manuever Sahx manager Gary Hinton tapped embattled 5th starter Clay Buchholz and said, “here’s your chance to show us what you’ve got, big fella”.  Buchholz was more than just competant.  He in no way shape or form looked liked the washed up 31 year old who was 8-10 with a 4.78 ERA during the regular season.  The 10 year veteran took the mound and in 6 shutout innings looked more like vintage Clay from back in the 2013 season when he was 12-1 with a stingy 1.74.  Buchholz finaly ran out, of gas and had to give way to Ziegler, after walking Barney with 2 out.  Brad Ziegler, who only had 4 saves in the regular season needed 12 pitches to strike out Russell Martin to end the game.  The Sahx took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd when Dustin Pedroia hit one over the Green Monster.  Buchholz would nurse that lead until Xander Bogaerts hit a 2 run shot in the bottom of the 8th to make it 3-0, which is how it ended.

Red Sox lead series 2-0

GAME 1 ALCS: “Jackie’s Chan-ce”

600747261_MCa_BOS_0535GAME 1 - Fenway
Estrada vs S.Wright
Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 4

Matt Barnes started the 7th in relief of Steven Wright who left with a 2-1 lead after pitching 6 sharp innings.  Barnes would exit the game 4 batters later without recording an out and with his team down 4-2.  With the bases loaded Joey Bats doubled home two and Juan Encarnacion knocked in one with a grounder.  Boston would answer back a inning and a half later when Big Papi led off the bottom of the 8th with his 2nd double of the day.  Mookie Betts doubled him home, then scored on a Chris Young RBI single 3 batters later.  Jackie Bradley’s sac fly to left plated the 3rd and final run to give the Sahx a 5-4 lead.  The top of the 9th would be no cake walk for closer Craig Kimbrel, who served up a lead off triple to Joey Bats.  After fanning Encarnacion in a big spot he walked Saunders, fanned Tulo, then walked Paredes before fanning Russell Martin for the 3rd and final out allowing the Fenway faithful to exhale.

Red Sox lead series 1-0

GAME 7: “High Stras Situation”

601171583_TFa_WSH_086GAME 7
Matz vs Strasburg
Nats 2, Mets 0

A two out two run shot by Jayson Werth in the bottom of 3rd accounted for all of the scoring in this tension riddled decisive game 7.  Stephen Strasburg  was money, with a 10k 4 hit shutout over 7 1/3 innings of top notch work.  The pen was equally as stout keeping the Metsies from launching one of their patented 2 run blasts that could have easily tied the game up.  Rzepczynski arrived on the scene with one out in the 8th and Kelly Johnson on 1st.  Wilmer Flores was sent up to pinch hit for Jay Bruce, who was announced into the game.  Flores ripped a one hopper to Turner at 2nd, who flipped to Espinosa at short, who threw a strike to Murph at 1st to complete the inning ending 4-6-3 DP.  The Metsies would go down in order in the 9th as kelley came on to get final 2 outs and the series ending save.

Nats Win Series 4-3

GAME 6: “Tangled up in (orange and) Blue”

GAME 6 - Nats Park
deGrom vs Roark
Mets 7, Nats 4604226655_ESa_NYM__0819

With their back up against the wall the Amazin’s had game 6 starter Jacob deGrom on a very tight leash.  After NY jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd and deGrom gave those runs right back the leash got tigher.  When NY added 4 big runs in the top of the 3rd deGrom knew he had to get out to that mound and protect it.  After getting the first out of the inning something tightened up in his shoulder and that marked the end of his day.  New York was now forced to rely on a cavalcade of relievers to get them to Familia in the 9th.  Goedel (who got the win), Blevins (2 scoreless IP), Lugo (shaky) and Reed (scoreless 8th) were up to the task.  Familia fanned 2 as part of a perfect 9th and just like that this series was headed to a decisive game 7.  Once again NY went deep multiple (3) times.  Conforto, Duda and  Cabrera did the damage.  Yoenis Cespedes didn’t go yard, but he was 3 for 5 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk.

Series tied 3-3

GAME 5: “Nats Thor(t) Mets”

601171583_TFa_WSH_053GAME 5
Scherzer vs Syndergaard
Nats 8, Mets 5

The Nats broke the Mets serve in game 5 as we were served up a repeat performance from game 1 starters Scherzer and Thor.  With the Metsies up 4-3 after 5 the Nats got to Thor in a big way and chased him to the showers.  With 2 outs Washington got a PH RBI single from Jose Lobaton and a two run knock from Murph, who knocked in half of Washington’s tallies (eight) on the day.  Scherzer pitched long enough (5IP/4ER) to get the win.  Thor gave up 7 in 5 2/3 to get tagged with the “L”.  New York, who lives by the long ball, scored all 5 of their runs on 4 dingers, which indluded one off of Thor’s bat.

Nats lead series 3-2

GAME 4: “A Reyes of light…”

GAME 4
J.Ross vs Colon
Mets 8, Nats 3532691057_RRa_TOR_1374

Down 3-0 after 2 1/2 innings of play the Amazin’s looked to have dug themselves into a very deep abyss.  The resiliant team from Flushing  chipped away with a solo run in the 3rd and a 2 spot in the 4th off via a pinch hit double by Justin Ruggiano.  Then in the bottom of the 5th they unleased a 5 run barrage that chased J.Ross from the mound.  It all started by an all too familar bone head play (error) by former mate Dan Murphy and it culminated a 2 run shot by Yoenis Cespedes.  Two batter earlier prodical son Jose Reyes hit a 3 run shot to put New York up for good.  With that 5 run cushion the Mets would play mix and match with their pen.  Eric Goeddel got the win as a reward for 2 perfect innings of relief after Big Sexy managed to only go 4 innings (3 runs).

Series tied 2-2

GAME 3: “The Grandy-man can”

GAME 3 - Citi Field
Strasburg vs Matz
Mets 5, Nats 2

532691021_CJa_NYM_295The series moved 4 hours north on I-95 and the LIE to Flushing with the Amazin’s in a must win situation in this pivotal game 3 matchup.  Mucho tension as the teams exchanged solo runs knotting it at 2 after 7 1/2 innings of play.  By the bottom of the 8th both starters were lathering up with a bar of no decision.  Travis d’Arnaud led off the 8th by striking out vs Nats reliever Kelley, but the Metsies aren’t about small ball, they forgo OBP in favor of HR power and with one swing of the bat Asdrubal Cabrera launched the go ahead shot.  Kelly and company were rattled as Neil Walker singled and Kelly Johnson walked.  When PH Jay Bruce went down swinging it looked like the damage was done.  That’s when the Grandy-man (Curtis Granderson)ripped his 3rd hit of day to score Walker and make it a 2 run lead.  For good measure PH Justin Ruggiano singled home Johnson to hand closer Jeruys Familia a 3 out cushion.  The Mets closer needed just 12 pitches to set the Nats down in order to close out the contest.

Nats lead series 2-1

GAME 2: “Melancon, Turner…Overdrive”

GAME 2
deGrom vs Roark
Nats 7, Mets 4601171583_TFa_WSH_091

2014 NL ROY Jacob deGrom (4R/5IP) barely made it to the 5th inning and what can generously be termed a “non-quality start”.  Rookie Trea Turner (2-2, 3RBI) had deGrom’s number with one of his 2 hits being a 2 run shot.  Nats starter Tanner Roark tired in the middle of the 5th and gave way to Belisle.  5 more Nat relievers would trot to the bump with Melancon getting the final 2 outs for his 4th save of the tournament.  Nats team BA moved to a lofty .285 for the tourny, while the Amazin’s dropped to .219.

Nats lead series 2-0

NLCS GAME 1: “Murph mashes ex-Met mates”

601171583_TFa_WSH_064GAME 1 - Nats Park
Syndergaard vs Scherzer
Nats 8, Mets 2

Daniel Murphy (4-5, 2RBI/2R) was a one man wrecking crew vs his old mates in the opener.  Thor and Scherzer had a tight 3-2 duel going, but when the Scandanavian deity tired the Mets had to go to the pen and Josh Smoker got smoked (3 runs 1/3 IP).  Anthony Rendon (2-3, 2RBI/2R) brought his lumber as well.  Washington’s pen (Treined/Solis/Rivero) was perfect over the final 2 1/3 as the Nats drew first blood

Nationals lead series 1-0

Nats end Cincy’s run to gain Final 4

601171583_TFa_WSH_072GAME 1 - Nats Park
Straily vs Roark
Nats 6, Reds 1

Wash dropped a 4 spot on the Cinderella Reds in the bottom of the 2nd and never looked back.  Tanner Roark (2 hits / 6 IP) fanned 7 and gave way to the pen.  Rendon and Ramos each had 2 hits.

GAME 2
Finnegan vs Scherzer
Nats 3, Reds 2
601171583_TFa_WSH_040

Down 2-0 after 3 the Reds rallied back to tie the game in the top of the 7th with a Suarez 2 out solo blast.  Wash answered right back thanks to back to back singles by Rendon and Werth and a Wood WP that allowed both runners to move up 90 feet.  Bryce Harper didn't need to do anything more than lift a fly ball to right center for a sac fly to make it 3-2.  Starter Max Scherzer was done after 8 innings (2 ER).  Rzepcynski and Melancon combined to pitch a perfect 9th to put Washington 1 win away from the final 4.

GAME 3 - Great American BP
Strasburg vs DeSclafani
Nats 10, Reds 3

Danny_EspinosaHarper led off the game with a homer.  Wash scratched out another run to go up 2-0.  A 2 run single by Suarez in the home half of the 4th tied it and gave Cincy some new life.  Then it all came crashing down on the Cinderella team from the Queen City.  Washing scored 8 unanswered run over the final 5 innings to make this a laugher.  Danny Espinosa (3-5) hit a homer, along with Werth, in the 5th and scored a run.  Dan Murphy also had a 3 hit day.  Strasburg, who wasn't on his A game, was good enough over five and a third.  Solis and Petit finished out the game and secured the sweep for the NL's #2 see.

Nats top Bucs in 4

Game 1: Nationals 10 Pirates 5

Pirates sent ace Gerritt Cole to the mound opposed by Nats Stephen Strasburg. Both teams got the offense going early, as Gregory Polanco hit a 2-run homer in the top of the first and Nationals strung together a Bryce Harper double and three singles to knot the score at 2-2. Nationals broke the game open in the third. as three singles and two doubles led to an 8-run inning. Pirates would ultimately score 5 runs, but the game was not much in doubt after the Nets’ big inning.

Game 2: Nationals 3 Pirates 2

Washington sent Tanner Roark to the mound, while the Pirates countered with Ivan Nova. Pirates scored 2 runs on 4 hits in the 5th to take the lead, and held the Nats’ scoreless until Anthony Rendon scored on a Michael Taylor double in the 7th. Pirates took the 2-1 edge into the bottom of the 9th, with Felipe Rivero charged with locking down the win. Trea Turner coaxed a walk to start the inning, and “Dusty Baker” sent Ben Revere to the plate to pinch hit. The light hitting Revere promptly blasted a two run walk off homer to right, and the Nationals went up 2-0 in the series.

Game 3: Pirates 6 Nationals 1

With the Pirates facing elimination, Jonathan Niese took the hill opposed by Nationals Ace Max Scherzer. Gregory Polanco hit his second homer of the series in the first to give Pitt a 2-0 lead, then followed up with his third homer (and second of the game) in the 4th. Niese held the Nationals scoreless until the 7th, and Pittsburgh cruised to an easy victory.

Game 4: Nationals 5 Pirates 3

Chad Kuhl started for Pittsburgh while Joe Ross served as the stater for Washington. Neither team scored through 5 innings. The Nationals got on the board in the top of the 6th, as Anthony Rendon singled home Area Turner. Nationals added another run in the 7th, but the Pirates were not ready to go quietly. In the bottom of the 7th, Nationals reliever Blake Treinen got 2 quick outs. Then
followed a walk, single, single, walk, and single to plate 3 runs and chase Treinen. With runners on 1st and 3rd, “Dusty” (and any observer knows he would NEVER do this in real life) summoned closer Mark Melancon to snuff out the rally. Melancon coaxed a fly out from Frazier, and as we headed to the top of the 8th the Pirates had a 1-run lead. Nationals pinch hitter Pedro Severino blasted a home run to tie the game, and after a scoreless Pirates 8th the game entered the 9th inning. With Neftali Feliz on the mound, Bryce Harper led off the 9th with a 443-foot home run to give the Nats the lead. Schugel replaced Feliz, and walked David Murphy to put the go-ahead run on base. He didn’t stay there long, as Wilson Ramos grounded into a double play. Up stepped Trea Turner then blasted the second Nats homer of the inning. Jonathan Papelbon came on to get the save, and the Nats moved on.

Enjoyable series to play, and good job by Stan. Other than Game 1, any of these games were tight, tense affairs.

Jays over O’s in 5

601170873_MCa_TOR_109Aaron Sanchez outpitches Chris Tillman in game 1 and 5 of the series to send Toronto to the next round in the DKS Holiday tournament.  throughout the series Toronto pitching shut down the Baltimore bats.  This was a fun series, but one that was filled with R/T 9 errors as 6 times the games had to be restarted despite the 12-30 patch.  All disruptions came about on the Client end of the games starting in game 2 of the series occuring each game until the end (multiple times in some cases).
Despite the obvious disruptions, this was a fun, well played series on the part of Toronto and we wish them luck (just as in real life) as they move onto the next round.
